Energy drinks are everywhere today. Everyone walks around chugging them it seems. Red Bull, Amp these are just a couple of the most popular commercial ones. Not to mention the Venti espressos with extra shots of espresso. While I am definitely a huge coffee fan, I think this amount of caffeine is a little excessive. Not to mention the fact that our youth are addicted to these highly caffeinated and sugary energy drinks cannot be good for their developing bodies. Back when I was a teenager I did have a couple of friends addicted to Diet Coke (highly toxic also) but they weren’t the beverages with outrageous amounts of caffeine like today. Not to mention I knew no one that drank coffee and have no clue if there were coffee shops of any kind.
So imagine my joy when I discovered a way to supercharge my coffee without adding extra caffeine, syrup, or other toxic substances. It’s my version of the popular Bulletproof coffee. It’s simple delicious and packed with energy delivering, real food powerhouses. This is great for either your morning coffee or an afternoon pick me up. I wouldn’t advise drinking it all day, but honestly when I drink a cup of this energy drink I don’t feel the need to keep continuously caffeinating my body. I feel energetic, alert, and satisfied. I went from drinking 2 cups of coffee in the morning to starting my day with 1 cup of this homemade energy drink. As an added bonus I can pronounce everything on the ingredient list and it tastes so good that I feel as if I have treated my self to an expensive coffeehouse drink.
What’s in this Energy Drink?
The ingredients are simple-
6-8 oz brewed coffee (this one is my absolute favorite)
a little cream, to taste
1 tsp. coconut oil (this one is the one I use)
1 tsp. butter (this one is my favorite)
a splash of vanilla extract (like this one)
1/2 tsp. maple syrup (find a good one here)
And you will need a blender (this is a good one)
Combine brewed coffee and other ingredients in a blender. Blend on high for at least 30 seconds to emulsify. Enjoy immediately. The end product is frothy like a latte but even more decadent!
A couple of notes:
- I prefer virgin, unrefined coconut oil for this recipe. I do use refined coconut oil in some cooking applications, but the coconut flavor from the unrefined adds a richness that is unbeatable.
- You can omit the cream and maple syrup to lower calories and if you are avoiding sugars. It is still delicious.
- Grassfed butter is best in this also for the CLAs and other health benefits. It is worth the splurge if you aren’t already using it!
Enjoy this quick energy drink with it’s luscious creamy texture and health benefits and say good bye to commercial energy drinks and expensive coffees.
